COURSE OUTLINE
INSTRUMENTS- Timbre.
Statement of Inquiry:
Key concept:

Global Context:
Exploration to Develop:
Criterion A- Identify instruments by sight and group instruments into logical families.
Criterion B- Identify instruments by listening, using timbral, pitch and other considerations.
Criterion C- Identifying timbres and connections to non-musical stimuli.
Criterion D- Arts process journal, self and peer assessment.
By the end of this year students are expected to be able to:
Describe sound using appropriate words (timbre/ tone- colour and pitch)
Learn what sound is and the different ways it is produced.
Investigate the evolution of instruments through the ages and understand how technological advances have shaped those changes.
Identify orchestral families and instruments by sight and sound.
Pupils will understand that all sound is the vibration of airwaves and the way these waves are set in motion can be determined by the timbre/ tone-colour. They will also understand that the size and design of musical instruments have a crucial bearing on the quality of sound and the pitch that they make. They will learn that instruments can be grouped according to the way sound is produced and learn instrument specific techniques that players use to create new sounds. Pupils will learn to use timbral (and other music specific) terms to describe the sounds that they hear and also discuss the atmosphere that different sounds create.
