BLUES MUSIC
Statement of Inquiry: The "blues" is a musical structure identified (originally) with the personal expression of melancholy, reflecting the history and culture of Africans in an adopted land. We will explore the cliches and conventions of different styles of blues music and demonstrate our understanding by composing and performing an original composition. Key concept: Identity Related concepts: Expression, Structure Global Context: Orientation in space and time Exploration to Develop: Civilizations and social histories, heritage; pilgrimage, migration, displacement and exchange Criterion A- Keyword test and listening tasks. Criterion B- Performance of 12 bar blues in groups. Criterion C- Writing lyrics, improvising using pentatonic scale, group rehearsals. Criterion D- Arts process journal, self and peer assessment. By the end of the year students are expected to be able to: Learn to play a 12 bar sequence on instrument of choice. Rehearse and perform a 12 bar Blues in groups. Understand and use chords i iv and v. Write original lyrics to fit 12 bar pattern. Improvise using pentatonic scales and/or Mixolydian mode. Present a project on a Blues artist of their choice and investigate cultural and historical similarities and differences. Investigate historical and cultural ties to African Music, Jazz and Dance. |
